Welcome to Parenthood - Commentary

Did we ever tell you what big Green Day fans we are? Well, about six years ago when Billy Joe Armstrong had his first kid, it got me to thinking. What's it like to be a punk rocker and a father? I mean, I was a father before I founded Max the Dork, but he was in Green Day long before he was a father. To that end, I wrote the lyrics to the parody, "Welcome to Parenthood," based on the Green Day song "Welcome to Paradise." But it wasn't until recently that I decided to start playing it at shows. We were already playing "Welcome to Paradise," so all I had to do was throw in our new lyrics. It's a fun song, and pretty accurate depiction of what early parenthood is like. Or at least what it was like for me. And, I imagine, what it was like for Billy Joe.
