January 30 Recap
Hey, thanks to all of you who showed up for the show on friday night at Brenner's Brew, it was a really fantastic show!!! We really appreciated the support and we hope we gave you a decent show in return. And if you liked what you saw on Friday, make sure you come back on February 27th for a replay! (-:
So we found out the night before the show that Satan's Minions is the code-name for a band fronted by Joe Alam. Now, Joe Alam's band is Fuck Souls, and not only did Bret play drums for Fuck Souls, but on the night he quit (after having just played Brenner's Brew), Barbara pretty much all but banned Joe from Brenner's. So when we found out that Satan's Minions was Fuck Souls in disguise, we thought it might be interesting to see the fireworks.
Well, we got to the Brew, and Barbara was on the phone with Satan's Minions fearless leader. Apparently, he was asking her if they (Satan's Minions) could use the other bands' equipment. She asked me and I flat out said "No." There is no way my stuff is ending up in the hands of the king of feedback. Well apparently, the other bands felt the same way. So I filled Barbara in on the flim-flam, and she was surprised to say the least. She called back the drummer of Satan's Minions, who informed her that they weren't planning on playing the show, because they'd broken up weeks ago. So now there was a ton of confusion. Ten minutes later, Joe called back and said "OK, we'll play with our own instruments." But by then, Barbara had had enough, and said she was cancelling Satan's Minions. She had never received confirmation for the show in the first place.
Later, I found out why Joe was asking to use another band's equipment. It seems he'd asked one Rhett Mallardi (drummer for The Positives and former drummer of Fuck Souls) if he would play drums for him that night, and Rhett said he didn't have drums to play on. So, wow. It just reads like a soap opera.
Well anyway, so the Ken Shiles Band took the stage and I have to say that while their style of music is not my cup of tea, they are very talented, and the music was certainly upbeat. I especially liked their cover of Bob Marley & the Wailers' "No Woman No Cry." Good stuff.
Then Max the Dork took the stage, and I have to say, the idea of starting the shows with the intro to Bonehead from the Crapital Punishment CD (the section from Broken Arrow featuring the dork named "Max" that we took our name from) was a good idea indeed. The crowd seemed to really get into the whole intro, especially the line "You probably thought I was a computer nerd, didn't ya?" Good stuff. We were received well, especially during Ode to Ed and Lockstep, and we had an awesome Eulogy singalong. Best at Brenner's yet. And didn't I just say that last time we played Brenner's? This one was better. All I can say is, if we keep having shows like this, we might actually catch on.
So the final act of the night was a one-man acoustic jam called Shindig. Good stuff. A lot of tongue-in-cheek unapologetic acoustic rock, very refreshing to hear from this West Virginian. And a first for me at a show: he actually interrupted the show to call a friend back home on the cell phone (broadcasting his friend's voice over the PA) to ask him about the term "Plum gutted." Good times.
Once again, thanks to everyone who came out, and make sure you mark February 27th on your calendar!
Next up: The Blue Room
Our next show is the Blue Room in Secaucus, this coming Saturday (Feb. 7). Here's the show flier:

New Merchandise
We're gonna 86 the Cafe Press merchandise off our website. For one thing, no one ever buys it (except us! What geeks). For another thing, it's just way too fucking expensive. No one in their right mind would buy that overpriced crap! So instead we're making our own merchandise. In the very near future, look for silkscreened T-shirts for $6, tote bags for $5, new button and sticker designs (still 2 for a dollar!), and my personal favorite thing: Max the Dork bracelets for a buck. More info on this to come. Very soon, trust me.
